TRAFFIC SIGNS AND MARKINGS TECH II

General Functions
  

This position is a semi-skilled role that conducts specialized technical work in the inspection, installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic sign and marking devices.

Work is performed with considerable independent judgement and is under the direction of the Foreman or higher-level Tech and is reviewed through periodic conferences and reports.

 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  

Duties may vary based on area of assignment. The following are representative duties; it is not the intent to capture all duties performed by this classification.

  • Performs traffic sign and pavement marking work in accordance with federal (FHWA) and local (FDOT) specifications, including installation, construction, inspection, and maintenance; uses retro reflectometer devices to assess reflectivity and ensure compliance.
  • Reads plans, sketches, or maps to determine proper placement of traffic signs; installs signs, cold plastic preformed markings, raised pavement markers, and pre-formed heat-activated legends.
  • Assists with sign fabrication in the shop and uses hand or power tools to install or remove signposts and signs.
  • Responds to traffic sign complaints by assessing the situation and making appropriate temporary or permanent corrections; periodically inspects existing signs and installs replacements per work order.
  • Prepares, inventories, loads, and operates tools and equipment for pavement marking tasks; maintains a stock of standard signs and posts on the truck for emergency use.
  • Reviews pavement markings in the field and performs adjust or installs new markings; operates thermoplastic handliner and supports the Foreman with pavement marking layout; assists in the maintenance and repair of thermoplastic equipment.
  • Installs and maintains sidewalk and pedestrian markings using painting systems; sets up safe work zones including construction signs, cones, and arrow boards per Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) standards.
  • Troubleshoots, inspects, and repairs electronic sign control equipment, including programming using specialized software.
  • Completes and submits detailed field reports and service-related electronic documentation, including photos, time, materials, and location data; evaluates work orders based on field conditions.
  • May be tasked with directing and supervising Traffic Signs and Markings Technicians.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
 
Minimum Qualifications
  

High School diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of experience in basic construction, electrical, and basic computer system operations. An equivalent combination of education or experience may be substituted.

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License.


Must have certification as a Level I Sign and Pavement Markings Technician by the International Municipal Signal Association.


Obtain certification as a Level II Signs and Pavement Markings Technician by the International Municipal Signal Association within one year of hire.


Must be able to perform and successfully complete a signs and markings assessment (70% grade or better passing) for the installation of traffic control devices.


Required to possess and maintain the appropriate valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for the type of vehicle operated within 6 months of hire.

 
Preferences
  

Ability to read and interpret schematics and/or blueprints.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Basic computer skills to include utilizing word processing, spreadsheet and email software.
