EQUIPMENT MECHANIC I

General Functions
  

This key position performs basic and routine mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of light and heavy-duty gasoline and diesel-powered equipment and vehicles. Tasks are conducted under the guidance of experienced mechanics.

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Shop Supervisor or assigned supervisor. Performance is reviewed through observations, reports, and results achieved.

 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  

Duties may vary based on area of assignment. The following are representative duties; it is not the intent to capture all duties performed by this classification.

  • Performs basic and routine maintenance and repairs on automotive, construction trailers, emergency apparatus, and heavy equipment.
  • Replace fluids, hoses, belts, batteries, lights, and related components.
  • Changes and repairs tires.
  • Cleans and lubricates mechanical parts.
  • Assists higher-level mechanics with more complex repairs.
  • Follows proper safety procedures and uses protective equipment as required.
  • Operates tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Maintains accurate records of work performed.
  • Inspects work areas to ensure cleanliness and safety and report any deficiencies to supervisory or quality control personnel.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
 
Minimum Qualifications
  

High school diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of experience in automotive or heavy equipment maintenance and repair. An equivalent combination of education or experience may be substituted.

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License.

Must possess Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification or obtain within three (3) years of hire.

Utilities Solid Waste

Possess and maintain a valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License; or obtain within one (1) year of hire.
