This role performs basic and routine mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of light and heavy-duty gasoline and diesel-powered equipment and vehicles. Tasks are conducted under the guidance of experienced mechanics.

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Shop Supervisor or assigned supervisor. Performance is reviewed through observations, reports, and results achieved.

Duties may vary based on area of assignment. The following are representative duties; it is not the intent to capture all duties performed by this classification.

• Performs routine preventative maintenance and basic repairs on automotive, construction trailers, emergency apparatus, and heavy equipment.
• Replaces fluids, hoses, belts, batteries, lights, and related components.
• Changes and repairs tires.
• Cleans and lubricates mechanical parts.
• Assists higher-level mechanics with more complex repairs.
• Follows proper safety procedures and uses protective equipment as required.
• Operates tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
• Maintains accurate records of work performed.
• Inspects work areas to ensure cleanliness and safety and reports any deficiencies to supervisory or quality control personnel.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

High school diploma or equivalent.

One (1) year of experience in automotive or heavy equipment maintenance and repair.

An equivalent combination of education or experience may be substituted.

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License.

Must possess Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification or obtain within three (3) years of hire.

Two (2) years of additional experience may be substituted for each ASE/EVT Certification required.

Depending on area of assignment, must possess and maintain a valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License with required endorsements; or obtain within one (1) year of hire.

Recognized competency certifications in a related field such as diagnostics, automotive or diesel mechanics, fuel system, or hydraulic systems.
