EQUIPMENT MECHANIC II

General Functions
  

This key position performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of automotive, construction trailers, emergency apparatus, and heavy equipment.

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Shop Supervisor or assigned supervisor. Performance is reviewed through observations, reports, and results achieved.

 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  

Duties may vary based on area of assignment. The following are representative duties; it is not the intent to capture all duties performed by this classification.

  • Performs skilled maintenance and repairs on automotive, construction trailers, emergency apparatus, and heavy equipment including major overhauls.
  • Diagnoses equipment malfunctions and determines required repairs.
  • Repairs and replaces major components including engines, transmissions, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, and braking systems.
  • Operates diagnostic equipment and tools to identify issues and verify repairs.
  • Provides guidance and assistance to lower-level mechanics.
  • Ensures compliance with safety standards and procedures.
  • Operates tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Maintains accurate records of repairs and parts used.
  • Inspects work areas to ensure cleanliness and safety and report any deficiencies to supervisory or quality control personnel.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
 
Minimum Qualifications
  

High school diploma or equivalent and four (4) years of experience in automotive or heavy equipment maintenance and repair. An equivalent combination of education or experience may be substituted.

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License.

Must possess two (2) Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certifications or obtain within three (3) years of hire.

Utilities Solid Waste

Possess and maintain a Florida Commercial Driver’s License; or obtain within one (1) year of hire.

 
Preferences
  

Associate’s degree from an accredited institution in automotive or diesel mechanics.

Recognized dealership or competency certifications in a related field such as diagnostics, automotive or diesel mechanics, fuel system, or hydraulic systems.
