PARKS AND GROUND SPECIALIST

General Functions
  

This role is responsible for the health, appearance, and safety of turf areas and landscaped spaces within park properties. This position performs a variety of turf management, pesticide applications, equipment operation, and landscape maintenance tasks to ensure high-quality recreational surfaces for community use.

Work is performed under the supervision of the Chemical Spray Foreman and is reviewed through meetings, conferences, reports and results achieved.

 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  

Duties may vary based on area of assignment. The following are representative duties, it is not the intent to capture all duties performed by this classification.

  • Maintains a valid Florida Restricted Use Pesticide License in ornamental and turf, aquatic weed control, and natural areas.
  • Inspects turf areas to identify diseases, weeds, insects, nutritional deficiencies, and other conditions and performs or recommends corrective treatments.
  • Applies herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, and other chemical treatments to Bermuda, St. Augustine, Zoysia, and Bahia turf for weed, pest, and disease control.
  • Applies liquid and granular fertilizers to support turf growth, color, and overall health.
  • Calculates appropriate application rates and calibrates and maintains chemical sprayers and fertilizer spreaders to ensure accurate and safe applications.
  • Operates and transports specialized turf-maintenance equipment, including sprayers, spreaders, tractors, top dressers, loaders, and related equipment.
  • Identifies and treats exotic and invasive plant species on park properties.
  • Maintains required records and reports for chemical and fertilizer usage, including application rates, quantities, locations, and weather conditions.
  • Coordinates application schedules and turf-maintenance practices with park staff to minimize disruptions to park operations and visitors.
  • Purchases necessary chemicals, fertilizers, and supplies; maintains inventories and required documentation
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
 
Minimum Qualifications
  

High school diploma or equivalent and two (2) years of experience operating turf-maintenance equipment such as boom sprayers, tractors, fertilizer spreaders, loaders, top dressers, and other cultural-practice equipment. An equivalent combination of education or experience may be substituted.

Must possess and maintain a Florida Restricted Use Pesticide License in ornamental/turf, aquatic weed control, and natural areas or obtain within the first six (6) months of hire.

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License.

 
Preferences
  

Specialized training in Horticulture, Turf Grass Science, Agronomy or related field.
