PLANT SPECIALIST I

General Functions
  

This key position is an entry level role who performs operation and maintenance of a treatment facility in compliance with the requirements of the Utilities Health and Safety Manual. Participates in the analysis and troubleshooting of operational problems using available data and follows the proper course of action to meet plant operating objectives. May be assigned as a team leader and to provide training.

Work performed under the supervision of a designated supervisor. Work is reviewed through observations, conferences, reports and results achieved.

 
Representative Duties /Assignments
  

Duties may vary based on area of assignment. The following are representative duties, it is not the intent to capture all duties performed by this classification.

  • Provides preventive and corrective maintenance on mixers, blowers, compressors, pumps, motors, and related equipment.
  • Collects process samples in accordance with approved protocol.
  • Maintains operational database and records.
  • Monitors and responds to facility Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.
  • Operates and maintains chemical feed equipment.
  • Prepares reports and documents situations as needed.
  • Performs quality checks and responds to trouble calls.
  • Drives a tractor-trailer or dump truck, if applicable to location.
  • Troubleshoots processes and equipment such as chemical feed units and various level control systems, hydraulics and pneumatic equipment.
  • Provides operational control assistance for processes.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
 
Minimum Qualifications
  

High School Diploma or equivalent. An equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted.

Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Driver's License.

Depending on the area of assignment, must possess the following:

Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) Mandated Class “C” Water or Wastewater License

Florida Commercial Driver’s License, or obtain within six (6) months of hire

Must demonstrate skill proficiency within one (1) year of hire by successfully passing both a written and a corresponding hands-on skill test, with a passing score of 70% or higher on each, in at least one (1) of the specialty areas listed below.

Treatment process control in advance water or wastewater systems

SCADA/DCS system operations of electronic equipment

Proficiency and use of computer software used in operation

Mechanical maintenance of the treatment facilities

Biosolids processing and management (Applies to Water Reclamation Division.)

 
Preferences
  

Education, training, and/or experience in mechanical, electrical, or instrumentation.

Competency in basic mathematics, chemistry and biology.
